Wondering How 2016 Slipped Away?
Well the good news is that the new year brings a fresh start, so now is the perfect time to hit reset and boost your productivity goals. Getting your freelance self in order only requires a few adjustments, and here are some tips to help you make this year your most productive one yet.
Find Your Focus Rhythm
The hardest part of being a freelancer is developing a work rhythm that helps you stay accountable and productive at the same time. When you’re in a traditional office setting, the cadence of your day can be impacted by your coworkers, but as a freelancer your work rhythm is largely your own. A great tip for staying focused throughout the day is the 52-17 rule- aim to work for about 52 minutes (yes, set an alarm!), and then completely step away from your computer for 17. You’ll stay fresh and focused!
Make Passive Income
Instead of worrying about where your next paycheck will come from, find some projects that you can consistently count on to help you pay the bills each month. This means less time scrambling, and more time focusing on doing work that you love. Teaching a class on Skillshare is a great way to do just that! One of the things teachers love about Skillshare is that classes typically only take 1-3 weeks to make, and you can make $1400 within your first 6 months.
Use Your Time Wisely
As a freelancer, you’re largely in charge of your own schedule outside of client meetings, so use this to your advantage. Think about when in the day you’re most productive, and exclusively use that to tackle the projects that require the most concentration. If you get your best work done in the morning, tackle your biggest tasks first and get to emails later. Schedule your meetings along this time frame as well-- reserve meetings for the time of day when you don’t do your best solo work.
You are your own boss, so make sure that you’re setting yourself up for success in all parts of your work. The good news is that there are tons of apps out there to help you accomplish this! If you’re looking for tools to make better to do lists check out Trello and Wunderlist, or if you need some project management help Asana and Base Camp are great. Don’t waste time invoicing-- Wave and Zoho make this process easier. Taking good care of yourself will make you an even better freelancer, and Headspace and F.lux will help do just that.
Think about your priorities in terms of monthly, weekly, and daily goals. Take some time at the end of each month to reflect on what you’ve accomplished, and make sure you’re setting clear objectives for where you’d like to be in the next month. Goal setting can really help you get to the finish line, which is why we run a 30 day career challenge to help people get started in the right timeframe. Weekly and daily goals are important for ensuring that your monthly goals can be achieved, but they also help keep you on track for the detailed requirements of your clients. Have you thought about your goals for the New Year?
Prepare for Tomorrow the Night Before
Take some time at the end of each day to make sure you’ve accomplished the big goals you’ve set out, but then spend some time writing out your priorities for tomorrow. That way you can end your day with a clear head and leave work behind, but walk in the next day ready to dig into the key priorities that are essential to success.
