Photography Semester Classes in NYC and SF!

It’s finally here - classes for Photography Semester in NYC and San Francisco are up and running!

We’ve brought together some of the best and brightest minds in photography to offer classes in NYC and San Francisco running from late July through late September.  We’ll be covering a range of photography skills, from DSLR basics to advanced techniques to mobile photo adventures, and everything in between.

NYC

Nighttime and Long Exposures Photography
Friday July 20th & Monday, September 10th
Join photo pro JP Pullos in Central Park, where you’ll “paint” with light sources to experiment using images as a canvas. 

How Do I Use My Camera?
Sunday, July 29th; Sunday, September 23rd
Spend two hours with professional photographer JP Pullos exploring the visually complex wonderland of the basics of photography from exposure and shutter speed to aperture.

Improving Your Mobile Photography
Thursday, August 9th
Chris Ozer, currently featured as a suggested user on Instagram, teaches all of the elements of shooting and editing photos on an android or iPhone device. 

Don’t Fear The Flash!
Monday, August 13th
Are you uncertain about correct exposure? Or how to bounce flash? Freelance photographer Catalina Kulczar Marin leads this hands-on course for the amateur + emerging photographer on everything you need to know about flash for your camera.

Black and White Printing Crash Course
Monday, August 13th; Wednesday, August 15th; Monday, August 27th; Wednesday, August 29th
This 3-hour crash course led by Lucia Rollow will teach you everything you need to know to make b&w prints from negatives.

Use the Manual Setting On Your Camera at night
Monday, August 13th
Taking pictures at night, with no flash, is the easiest way to learn how a camera really works. Adam Berk teaches how to take beautiful pictures of the sunset and will give you tips on long exposure shots, all while taking an evening stroll around North Cove Marina.

Basics of Photography
Tuesday, August 14th
This basics of photography class with Pei Ketron will cover the fundamentals of photography that can be used to improve your digital, film, and even mobile photograpy.  

A Cheater’s Guide to Photographic Composition (3-session course)
Thursday, August 16th – Thursday, August 30th
Join Master Teacher Frank Wang in this 3-session course as he covers the basics of photographic composition. He’ll teach you all of the cheap tricks photo schools refuse to teach regarding composition – from proportion and geometry to lines and color.

An Intro to Gum Bichromate (3-session course)
Thursday, August 16th – Saturday, August 18th
Lucia Rollow teaches you the entire process of Gum Bichromate printing. You’ll leave the class knowing how to make your own large format negatives for contact printing and to make an actual print.

How to use your SLR like a Pro
Monday, August 27th
Join Master Teacher Frank Wang in his ever-popular intro to digital SLR class. Class topics will include learning the components of exposure, how to take your DSLR off “auto,” shooting in full manual mode, and how to generally take better photos.

The Basics of Photo Editing with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
Tuesday, August 28th
In this workshop with Pei Ketron, you’ll learn to make the most of your images after you’ve shot them using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

Instagram Workshop
Wednesday, September 19th
Join Brian DiFeo, founder of the Instagram NYC community in this workshop to learn more about the Instagram community, photo-taking tips, and best apps to use for editing/creating unique images.

This interactive workshop with large format photographer Matt Nuzzaco covers the basic of large format photography. You’ll learn the benefits and drawbacks of this style of photography, gear involved, how to load/handle sheet film, operation of the camera, and discuss processing/printing from film.

Many photographers are afraid to take photos of people. Much less strangers? *gasp* This hands-on course with Mona Brooks will help you practice to be a better portrait photographer.

Monday, August 20th

Thursday, September 13th
Aaron Durand and Nick Fisher co-host to teach you basic tips and top notch long exposure photography. From capturing skies, lights, and even moving objects like cars and trains, you’ll know how to do it all after only a few short hours.

Shooting Film: An Intro to Analog Photography 
Sunday, September 16th & Sunday, September 30th(2-Session Course) 
All you need is a camera and roll of film. Ike Edeani teaches you everything you need to know about film photography. You’ll become an expert film photographer in no time!

Connecting With Photography Communities
Tuesday, September 18th
Dottie Guy goes over the the ins and outs of photo communities such as Flickr, Instagram, Tumblr, meeting face-to-face, and many more. At the end of the class, you’ll be able to choose which ones are the best for you! 

The Basics of Food Photography
Sunday, September 23rd
Have fun exploring the basics of food photography with Kimberly Hasselbrink. You’ll spend the first half of the class discussing light, composition and color, and spend the second half of the class playing with food.

Intro to Food Photography
Saturday, September 29th
Professional food and restaurant photographer Sonya Yu shares her secrets on shooting food images - just like you see in books and magazines.
